Darius Garland Injury Update: Cavaliers Guard Exits vs 76ers with Right Foot Issue (2026)

In a surprising turn of events during a victorious game against the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland sustained an injury to his right foot and was unable to continue playing. This incident occurred in the third quarter of the match, which concluded with a score of 133-107 in favor of the Cavaliers.

As the game progressed, Garland faced a challenging moment when he had the ball stolen from him. After this play, he remained on the court for an extended period, clearly in discomfort. Eventually, he was assisted back to his feet and made his way to the bench while limping noticeably.

Despite sitting on the bench for some time, Garland did not return to the game, and soon after, he walked towards the locker room with a towel covering his head, signaling that something was amiss. Shortly thereafter, the team announced that he would not be returning to the game.

This isn't the first time Garland has faced injury challenges; he has been managing turf toe on his left foot since last season, which hindered him during the latter part of the year and throughout the Cavaliers' playoff journey. He underwent surgery on the affected foot, which set back his participation at the beginning of the 2025-26 season.

Garland, who is a two-time All-Star and will reach the age of 26 later this month, had been enjoying a solid season prior to this injury, averaging 17.9 points and 6.9 assists over 25 games. On the night of the injury, he had contributed 20 points and seven assists in just 23 minutes of play before having to exit.

Adding to the Cavaliers' woes, guard Sam Merrill also departed the game in the first half due to an injury to his right hand. Merrill had previously missed a month earlier in the season due to another issue with the same hand. Following the game, Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson expressed concern, indicating that both Garland and Merrill are unlikely to be available for their upcoming rematch against the 76ers on Friday.

Merrill was seen leaving the locker room with a splint on his index and middle fingers, highlighting the severity of his condition.

On the other side of the court, the 76ers experienced their own setback when starting power forward Dominick Barlow suffered a significant fall during the third quarter after taking a hard foul. He landed flat on his back and required assistance from his teammates to make it to the locker room. Shortly after the incident, Barlow was ruled out due to a bruised back. Fortunately, X-rays taken following the game returned negative results, but he is scheduled for an MRI on Thursday to further assess the injury.

This series of injuries raises important questions about player safety and the physical demands of the sport. What do you think could be done to better protect players on the court? Share your thoughts!
