Scientists speculate that this fermented dairy product may have fostered beneficial bacteria that combat inflammation, a process closely associated with aging. Similar findings have surfaced in studies involving centenarians from China and Europe, revealing that these individuals often have a rich diversity of microbes in their guts.
Dr. Mary Ni Lochlainn, a geriatrician at King’s College London, illustrates this concept using the analogy of a thriving garden: a diverse range of plants leads to a more resilient ecosystem. In contrast, the microbiome typically becomes less varied as we age, with helpful species gradually disappearing. Why is this significant? A decrease in microbial diversity has been connected to frailty, which results in a diminished capacity to recover from infections, falls, or surgical procedures, alongside chronic illnesses.
Elderly individuals who manage to preserve a rich variety of gut bacteria into their 80s and 90s often enjoy better health for extended periods. But what about improving our "gut age"?
