In a recent UFC event, a controversial stoppage has sparked a fiery debate, with Jorge Masvidal leading the charge against veteran referee Herb Dean. "Who's the referee? Oh, it's Herb Dean again. Unbelievable!" Masvidal exclaimed in his reaction video. "What is he waiting for? The fight is clearly one-sided, and Hooker is taking a beating. Come on, Herb!"
The stoppage, at 4:45 into Round 2, left many, including Masvidal, scratching their heads. While some might argue that Dean was giving Hooker time to recover and potentially turn the tide, the reality on the ground was quite different.
"Hooker showed little defense," Masvidal pointed out. "He was turtled up, taking strike after strike from Saint Denis. It was clear Hooker was in trouble, yet Dean waited."
And this is the part most people miss... Masvidal's criticism isn't just about this one instance. He believes Dean's judgment has been questionable for a while now. "Herb Dean, the worst referee ever? I'm afraid I have to agree," Masvidal said. "A fighter like Hooker, experienced but clearly struggling, needs to be protected. Yet, Dean allowed the fight to continue, with Hooker taking unnecessary damage."
Masvidal's concern is genuine. He believes that Dean, a well-known figure in MMA, might be past his prime as a referee. "It's not personal, but as a fellow fighter, I worry. Is Herb Dean still the right man for the job?"
