As the festive season fades and we transition back into our everyday routines, it's a welcome relief to have the promise of spring training just around the corner. While the off-season continues, with talented players still available, the market tends to slow down during this period. Major free agents narrow their focus, and minor free agents seek opportunities to impress during spring training. Despite the occasional trade, January and February are typically quieter months compared to the previous months of November and December.
Our last conversation, which took place during the peak of free agency in late November and early December, revealed an interesting insight into Mariners fans' perspectives. Unsurprisingly, you all believed that addressing the team's weaknesses through free agency was the way forward. This isn't surprising, as it's an exciting prospect to see your team sign big-name players or make significant trades. It's encouraging to see the front office and ownership sharing this enthusiasm and taking steps to build a formidable team. However, the Mariners' off-season activity hasn't quite lived up to this expectation, with only a few notable moves and the signing of Josh Naylor on a big contract.
When we asked about the team's third base situation for the upcoming season, the consensus was clear but unexpected. It was intriguing to see that, despite wanting more free agency activity, you all favored an internal promotion to fill the team's biggest gap. Perhaps this reflects the feeling that Bregman wasn't the right fit for the Mariners (a feeling that was recently validated by his big contract with the Cubs). While I'm not opposed to Williamson, I haven't seen enough to share the confidence that others have in his ability to make a significant leap next season. But I'm open to being convinced otherwise.
As spring training approaches, just a month away, the question arises: are the Mariners finished with their off-season moves? There's still time for trades or signings, but no immediate rumors suggest any significant activity. We'd like to hear your thoughts on whether the Mariners currently have a World Series-caliber roster. With a fully healthy pitching rotation and some strategic bullpen additions, the Mariners might only need a few final touches to reach the pinnacle of success.
