The team announced a substantial five-year contract extension for forward Kiefer Sherwood, a move that signals strong confidence in his abilities and his fit within the team's evolving roster. This deal, valued at a total of $28.75 million, comes with an average annual value of $5.75 million, making it a considerable commitment from General Manager Mike Grier.
Grier expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building. The ingredients he brings to our lineup on a nightly basis blend extremely well with the skillsets of his teammates, and we look forward to his contributions in the years to come.” This highlights Sherwood's perceived value in complementing the existing talent on the Sharks.
But here's where it gets interesting: Sherwood, now 30 years old, was acquired by San Jose on January 19, 2026, from the Vancouver Canucks. The trade involved sending prospect Cole Clayton and future second-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027 to Vancouver. In his brief stint with the Sharks this season, Sherwood has already made an impact, tallying two points (one goal, one assist) in just five games, including a crucial game-winning goal on March 3rd against the Montreal Canadiens. His physicality is also a notable asset; since his debut on February 4th against the Colorado Avalanche, he leads the team in hits with 28, even registering a team-best (tied) nine hits on March 1st against the Winnipeg Jets.

He's demonstrated a knack for scoring, recording two hat tricks in the 2025-26 season alone, on October 30, 2025, at St. Louis and December 19, 2025, at the New York Islanders. Between November 8th and November 20th, he put together a strong seven-game stretch with three goals and four assists, including two separate streaks of three games with points. He's also been remarkably consistent, boasting three straight 10-goal seasons and currently sitting just two shy of his career-best 19 goals from the previous year.
Looking at his broader NHL career, which spans stints with the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado, Nashville Predators, Vancouver, and now San Jose, Sherwood has played in 314 NHL games, contributing 123 points (61 goals, 62 assists). His experience extends to the American Hockey League (AHL) as well, where he's played 186 games and accumulated 172 points (92 goals, 80 assists) for teams like the San Diego Gulls, Colorado Eagles, and Milwaukee Admirals. His standout AHL performance in the 2021-22 season earned him a spot on the AHL Second All-Star Team after an impressive 75 points (36 goals, 39 assists) in just 57 games for the Eagles.
Before turning pro, Sherwood honed his skills in college, playing three seasons for Miami University (Ohio), where he appeared in 106 games and recorded 86 points (34 goals, 52 assists). He achieved a personal best of 38 points in the 2016-17 season. He also spent two seasons with the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League (USHL).
Originally signed by Anaheim as an undrafted free agent on March 20, 2018, the six-foot, 194-pound native of Columbus, Ohio, has carved out a solid career.
